Black Fact of the Week: Haiti Was the First Caribbean Country to Gain Independence from Europe

In 1804, Haiti became the first Caribbean country to gain its independence from Europe after 13 years of fighting against French powers. Under the leadership of former slave Toussaint L’Ouverture, the Haitian Revolution became the largest and most successful slave uprising in history, which led to Haiti (then known as Saint-Domingue) being the first and oldest Black republic in the world.
