“Somebody call the cops, it should be a crime the way my smile makes jaws drop and traffic stop.”
The head honcho of a jazzy vintage fashion line, it comes as no surprise that Lakeitha “Kaye” Washington packs a mean punch when it comes to threads and funky, cool wraps that tie around your head. (Slay!) She’s a Louisiana southern gal with flavor bolder that a bowl of gumbo, fresher than a creek, and sweeter than a field of magnolias. Style this fly (and effortless) doesn’t just blossom over night, but let Kaye tell it, she got it from her momma (and her daddy too)!
CM: Your have this whole vintage, sweet southern gal meets tribal Africa thing going on–that’s what I get when I see you. But how would you personally describe your style?
Kaye: Funky and sweet.
You operate a pretty cool fashion line called Washington Ave. How did the line come about?
My love for recreating vintage goods brought about Washington Ave. I am [also] the creative director at Washington Ave. [It started with me] mixing and styling any piece of clothing I put my hands on [and grew from there].
Where does your passion for styling come from?
The passion for fashion came from music and my fly ass momma and daddy.
Do you design any of the clothing that Washington Ave sells? Or are they all thrift finds?
We have a mix of both reconstructed and vintage originals.
What are some of your goals as a fashion professional?
To continue to be inspired by nature.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you’d give to anyone when it comes to putting together a killer outfit?
And Kaye definitely makes “comfortable” look fierce! Check out some of her hottest looks on the next few pages.
