Black Fact of the Week: John Singleton Was the Youngest Person Ever Nominated for ‘Best Director’ at the Academy Awards

In 1991, movie maven John Singleton quaked the industry with his brilliant directorial debut, Boyz n the Hood.

Not only was this now-classic an instant hit, but it also garnered a then 24-year-old Singleton numerous awards and accolades, including a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director at the 64th Academy Awards, making him the youngest person to ever receive a nomination for the latter. The LA-born director/screenwriter was also the first African American to be nominated for the award.
