Sadly, yet another young woman has fallen victim to the butt shot epidemic after undergoing an illegal procedure in a Queens basement.
According to the New York Daily News, Kelly Mayhew, a freelance writer for BET, travelled with her mother from her home state of Maryland to Far Rockaway, Queens, where she met with a phony plastic surgeon for a scheduled butt lift. Shortly after the “doctor” injected silicon shots into her, Mayhew began gurgling and struggling to breathe, her mother, Latrice Mayhew, told police.
The panicked mom immediately began to perform CPR and instructed the faux doc to call 911. Instead the unlicensed “surgeon” grabbed her keys, fled the scene and scurried away in a grey SUV, witnesses say.
The mother called authorities herself, and the 34-year-old was transported to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where she later died.
“We are saddened by the death of our colleague and friend, Kelly Mayhew. Our heart goes out to her family and we extend our deepest sympathies for their loss,” BET spokesman Jamie Owens said in a statement.
Latrice Mayhew told police that her daughter was healthy, but had five previous butt enhancements. She also stated that she thought the woman performing the procedure, who had been recommended by a family friend, was a licensed doctor, NBC New York reports.
Police are still hunting for the suspect. So far, no arrests have been made.
On her social media accounts, Mayhew didn’t hesitate to flaunt her curves. She also openly lauded both Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé. In fact, her last post of Facebook is a photo of the two with the caption, “Love.”
Prayers go out to Mayhew’s family. And to all the young girls out there: Please learn to appreciate your body that way that it was made. Stop looking up to stars like Nicki Minaj and trying to model your appearance off something that’s not real. If you want to have a curvier body, try visiting the gym or hitting some squats. But if you’re hell bent on surgery, please, talk to a licensed professional at a certified establishment. Always do your research first.
