Black Fact of the Week: Run D.M.C.’s ‘Raising Hell’ was the First Rap Album to Go Platinum
Released in 1986, Run D.M.C.’s third studio LP, Raising Hell, proved to be a hip hop history-maker. With its unique fusion of rap and rock, this multi-platinum album was the first rap record to hit the million-sold mark. Raising Hell also spawned the group’s biggest single to-date, “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith, and their funky fresh sneaker-head anthem “My Adidas,” making Raising Hell the first rap album to top the R&B charts and to land on the Billboard Top 10. And it doesn’t’ stop there. This rap-rock fusion also became the first rap LP to break into the mainstream market and receive airplay in MTV. #Ill
