A former Uber driver was sentenced Friday to 10-12 years in state prison on charges of kidnapping, rape and assault and battery of a female customer, reports Boston.com.
According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Alejandro Done, 47, picked up a woman waiting for an Uber on Tremont Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Although a former Uber employee, Done was not driving for the company at the time. While transporting the woman to her destination, Done reportedly told her she had to pay in cash and drove her to an ATM.
After the woman withdrew the cash, authorities said Done then drove her to a secluded area and parked his car. He proceeded to climb into the backseat and attack the woman, covering her mouth so that she couldn’t scream.
DNA evidence collected in this case linked Done to five previous sexual assaults ranging from 2006 -2010. He is set to face charges in those cases as well.
Despite the wickedness of this horror, let this be a lesson to all women while traveling alone: We need to better prepare ourselves for situations like these. I personally have never been a fan of Uber, being that just about anyone could drive for the service. But sickos like this pig Done exist just about everywhere, whether they work for a low-level taxi service or a top-rated limo line.
“I encourage the public to take precautions when using any ride-sharing service,” said Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. “While these apps are a modern convenience, they are not without their risks. Customers should make sure to verify license plates and car make and models before entering any vehicle, and remain active and aware of their surroundings.”
I say: Stay strapped! Whether you’re toting a pistol, strapped with mase, a switchblade, pocket knife or a pair of old scissors, carry some form of weapon that you could easily draw in a situation where your life and/or your womanhood is threatened. Maybe if we heard more stories about rapist being stabbed, popped or sliced, then these pervs would think twice before trying to violate.
