Afeni Shakur, activist and famed mother of the late hip hop legend Tupac, died Monday night (May 2).
Marin County officials reportedly responded to a call at her Sausalito, California home at 9:34 pm after she’d suffered from an apparent heart attack. The hip hop pilar was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 10:28 pm.
Since news of her death broke, celebrities and fans alike have plastered social media platforms with prayers, condolences and celebratory imagery in honor of Ms. Shakur.
An ex-Panther, Afeni Shakur garnered international fame through her son Tupac Shakur, who praised her in songs like “Dear Mama.” After his death in 1996, hip hop’s beloved matriarch launched the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, as well as several other commemorative projects, to cultivate her son’s legacy.
Afeni’s death comes just two weeks after it was confirmed that Director Benny Boom wrapped up the last scenes of Tupac’s long-awaited, upcoming biopic “All Eyez On Me.” Walking Dead star Danai Gurira will portray the now-late luminary in the film, which is set for release in September.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Coroners Office is currently investigating the exact cause of Afeni’s death, but in the meantime, prayers up to the Shakur family, and may Ms. Afeni R.I.P.!
